Abstract: This is an introduction to the theory of character sheaves due to Lusztig and its variants. We will look at character sheaves from various perspectives: as a geometrization of irreducible characters, as a natural class of sheaves satisfying a topological condition, and as the categorical center of the Hecke category. We will mention variants of character sheaves in other representation-theoretic contexts such as in the geometric Langlands correspondence.
