The Monte Carlo method of modeling photon migration in complex tissue-like scattering media is a primary tool that has been extensively used for numerous applications in biophotonics and biomedical optics. In current presentation we review the basic principles of the approach, potential of further development, and discuss the results of our research in the field.
We report about simulated distribution of absorbed light energy density within human skin following light illumination with a combination of three wavelengths (310, 514 and 800 nm) with ratios similar to ultraviolet, visible and infrared fractions of the solar irradiance spectrum. In addition, the report about simulation of the temperature fields and the dynamics of heat conduction into the skin tissue under several laser irradiation conditions with both a pulsed ultraviolet laser and a continuous-wave visible laser beam using Monte Carlo modeling. And investigation of the thermal reaction of Red Blood Cells irradiated by laser micro-beam (laser NIR tweezers). Finite-element methodology used for heat transfer simulation also presented.
